What is Ashtanga Yoga?

Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is a flowing style of yoga that integrates breath, posture, and focused gaze. The practice is effective at cultivating increased concentration, strength, and flexibility. Mysore style, or assisted self-practice, is the traditional method of learning Ashtanga vinyasa yoga. The practice method is named after the city of Mysore, India where the roots of this practice are and where it is still taught in the traditional way. We offer the following classes:

Mysore Style (self-practice) Classes

Students will practice some or all of the Ashtanga sequence that is appropriate for them. Each student will move with their own breath through the sequence of postures at their own pace. The teacher will observe each student individually and help them find their way deeper into postures through hands-on adjustments and verbal cues. Small groups, with a maximum of 12 students, allow the teacher to build a relationship with each student and their practice, enabling the teacher to address the specific needs of each student. Students of all levels practice together, each working in a way that is appropriate for them, while enjoying the energy of practicing with a group. Each daily practice session typically lasts 1 to 1 ½ hours depending on the level of experience of the practitioner. Students of all levels are welcome to attend. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn. This practice is appropriate for anyone at any level of fitness. This practice is different than any yoga class you’ve taken before!

Led Classes

Led classes are an opportunity to experience the dynamic flow of the Ashtanga vinyasa primary series. This sequence of postures focuses on developing a balance of strength and flexibility in the body. The sequence of postures is coordinated with breath, referred to as vinyasa (breath and movement). Depending on the experience of the group, the class will move together on the cues of the teacher through all or part of the Ashtanga vinyasa primary series.

We use Yogareg.com as our class signup and payment system. Registering for use of Yogareg.com gives you access to yoga class schedule and ability to purchase classes. The only information required is your name, street address, e-mail address, and phone number. We will use your email address to communicate important information about specific classes and workshops for which you are registered and information about your transactions with the system. We will also use your email to contact you about Ashtanga Yoga Asheville schedule changes and events. We never release your information to a third party.
